The National Association of Broadcasters convention is an annual pilgrimage for me. I go not so much because it is in Las Vegas, but in spite of the fact that it is in Vegas. I like the process of peeking over the horizon at the new technology, not just because of the excitement of invention, but because of the job security that comes with reducing the chance you will be blindsided by something new. Knowledge is power, and all that.
So here are my thougths from Las Vegas in video form. There is a large file if you are on a fat pipe (high speed connection) and here is a smaller version. I have to post two discrete files because of the limitations of the blogging software..
I am a sucker for any sort of high resolution photography. My family has grown accustomed to waiting around as I shoot multi-image panoramas that I stitch together using an amazing tool created by Microsoft Research. Even the banner on this site is a 190 degree pano using 13 images, the stitcher and group shot. All created with a crappy early generation point-and-shoot digital camera.
So it is with great interest that I see two photo stories this week dealing with emerging technologies in photography. The first is that Sony has bought iPix (or at least 28 of their patents) for four million dollars. The other is that Carnegie Mellon, NASA and a few Google Earth engineers have developed a gigapan robotic platform for under $200. To best understand the technology perhaps it is best to get a look at the results.
